    after eating hotpot all over china i have to say that i’ve never seen that haha. i’m sure it’s available but definitely not common. chinese, taiwanese, whatever they’re all fudging delicious

    linda says she’s had it but it was in a korean hot pot so…i dunno what’s going on apparently it’s in taiwan, japan, and korea but not in your standard chinese hot pot?

    YES CHIKUWAAA i love chikuwa *u* we usually cook them in things or slice them and mix them in like a tuna salad thing but sometimes i just open a package and eat them plain LOL

    ugh i spent such a long time looking for it though because in my family we call them all 甜不辣 indiscriminately whether we’re referring to the brown ones or the hollow white-brown ones

    but it looks like 甜不辣 is usually used to refer to the standard brown fish paste ones

So I spent a long time looking for the stupid “sweet-not-spicy” 甜不辣 and apparently it is sometimes referred to as “Taiwanese tempura”…Up to this point, I had always thought it was a staple in Chinese hot pots, but apparently it might only be Taiwan? It’s just a bi-colored hollow fish paste tube, but it tastes a little different from the other fish paste products (denser, one-color, brown). Apparently it exists in Japan, though! They’re called…chikuwa?
